After many years as a still photographer, founder Kate Schermerhorn decided in 2004 that it was time to try out moving images. She set up Luna Park Productions when an opportunity to make a documentary film landed in her lap; she quickly got hold of a video camera, figured out how to use it, made her first film, had it broadcast nationally on PBS and won an Emmy for directing it. Luna Park have just completed After Happily Ever After, another feature length doc, which will be broadcast nationally in 2011.

Kate Schermerhorn

Schermerhorn's directoral debut, one hour documentary Seeking 1906, (KQED/PBS) won Kate a Northern California Emmy for directing and was also nominated in the best historical/cultural feature category. The San Francisco Chronicle called the film "sublime and fascinating" and the Los Angeles Times said it was "surprisingly interesting."
Kate started her production career at age thirteen, working as an underpaid but enthusiastic chlid laborer for her producer father. She went on to work in Hollywood on commerical productions for directors Michael Moore, Tamra Davis, and Matthew Rolston, among many others, before moving to London, and on to still photography in 1995. As a photographer, Kate is the author of Americas Idea of a Good Time (Dewi Lewis Publishing), a photography book looking at Americas pursuit of happiness. Kate's photos have been widely published and exhibited. The New Yorker said of her work, "Kate Schermerhorn brings genuine life to the show. In her small black-and-white prints nothing seems wasted, and nothing's excessive."
Kate has lived and worked in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Florence, rural Scotland and for seven years in London. She has lived in San Francisco since 2002. Kate is the doting mother of two.
